Flower Town Dojo

Update: as of Spring 2016, Dojo has closed and is no longer hosting house parties.

Located in the Hongsha Village area of Flower Town just outside of Chengdu, Dojo is a house owned and managed by a handful of Chengdu expats. Aside from being a meeting point outside of Chengdu for the Natooke bicycle collective, Dojo is the location of a monthly American-style house party featuring local DJ’s in a unique setting. One thing we can say about attending one of Dojo’s monthly events is that you probably won’t see anything like that elsewhere in China.

Prices

Dojo never charges entry, but does sell drinks and food. Prices are cheap, with Qingdao beer available for 10 and Beer Lao for 20 yuan. In addition to beer, special mixed drinks are available at each event at Dojo. Pizza and fries are also available.

Getting to Dojo

In addition to taxi, you can also take the subway to Dojo. Get off at the second to last stop on the Eastern end of Line 2 (it’s called Honghe, 洪河). On days when Dojo hosts their monthly event, at exit A1 you’ll see cars with the Dojo logo who’ll take you to the gate for 15-20 yuan. At night, there are cars outside of the gate available to take passengers back to Chengdu.

An incredible house run by an incredible crew that just cant stop throwing the most insane house parties ever!

Looking forward to the upcoming event, so far their parties have never failed to impress.

Eclectic mash-up of all things awesome in these modern times of ours. From the freshest live music and acts to a killer infusion of Western food and drink as well as general house party culture, Dojo’s got it.

In it’s 6th iteration this one’s looking to up the ante with not only Chengdu’s best hip hop, but Beijing’s to boot. DJs will amass from the corners of Sichuan to bring face melting beats to this ordinarily placid little farmhouse. But as always you can still expect the standard delights as well as a pinch more of that Dojo magic we’ve all grown to love.

Whoa. Writing this just reminds me how much I look forward to these parties.

These are the craziest parties I’ve seen in China, period. If you’re looking for a quiet night out, do not go to one of the Mega House Parties at Dojo.

Honestly the location is further out than any other nightlife related event in Chengdu, but what you gain by traveling that distance is something that you can’t get inside the city – an actual house with front and back outside areas. Feels like an American house party.

The upcoming (August 2013) event looks to be the biggest yet, with MASSIVE headliners who are on a national tour and playing at Little Bar before tearing it down at Dojo. If the cops don’t shut this party down and/or the house doesn’t catch on fire, I’ll be surprised.

Would bringing kids be too crazy?…

Dojo occasionally hosts daytime events – for these I think kids are appropriate. Things that happy during the daytime there are yoga sessions, cooking classes, and so on. As for the monthly house parties, I would say it’s probably not a good idea to bring kids there.
