Haima Dutch Waffles

Update: Sadly, as of early 2016, Haima Waffles has closed.

Opened in the summer of 2015, Haima Waffles is the first restaurant in Chengdu to feature authentic hand-made Dutch caramel waffles. Called stroopwafels in Dutch, these are delicate waffles served with whipped cream and seasoned with cinnamon, making a delicious treat that goes perfectly with coffee, also served at Haima Waffles. Marcel, the Dutch owner, does not only bake the waffles himself but is also a certified coffee maker and sells bags of freshly roasted and ground coffee in Haima Waffles.

This location is a small restaurant with a capacity of about 15 patrons, located just south of the Tongzilin Carrefour walking distance from a collection of other well-known expat restaurants like Johnny 5 Donuts and Mike’s Pizza Kitchen.

Stroopwafels are made to order in an open kitchen with equipment imported from Holland, which the affable Dutch proprietor Marcel happily explains to patrons. Packaged waffles made at Haima Waffles are also available to take home, along with Dutch and Belgian brand chocolates and other sweets.

The name of this restaurant, Haima, is an English transliteration for the word “seahorse” in Chinese (海马). The tiled wall inside the restaurant includes a pattern featuring the restaurants namesake.
