The Hemp House

Note: After ten years, the Hemp House sadly closed its doors in May of 2015. As a memorial to a much-loved venue which built a strong legacy in Chengdu, this place listing will remain online.

Located in the East of Chengdu near the East Bridge (东门大桥), the Hemp House has been a staple of Chengdu nightlife since 2005. Owned and managed by a well-known Chinese couple of Chengdu outsiders, this is one of the best bars to check out in the Chengdu summertime. Featuring a large patio outside with seating and occasionally musical performance, the Hemp House is inexpensive and worth visiting. At the end of 2011, the Hemp House underwent construction to be reduced to half of its previous size. Although the venue no longer hosts events as big as before, it’s more cozy now.

Prices

The Hemp House charges a door fee on some weekends for bands or DJs, but is otherwise free to enter. Drinks are cheap in the Hemp House, with beers ranging from 15-50 yuan for imported specialty beers, or mixed drinks starting at 20 yuan.
