Johnny 5 Donuts

June 2017 update: Sadly, Johnny 5 Donuts has closed and is no longer around.

If you’re looking for excellent Chengdu donuts, you now have a place to go.

Opened by an enterprising American donut enthusiast, Johnny 5 Donuts is among the newest specialty eateries opened by expat residents in Chengdu. The location is just down the street from Mike’s Pizza Kitchen, and here you can expect the same sharp focus on food quality. Each donut is prepared meticulously, and great coffee is available for a very cheap 12 rmb.

Originally from Seattle, Johnny moved to Las Vegas over a decade ago and spent years honing his donut craft before coming to Chengdu and opening Johnny 5 Donuts. The name of this donut shop is a reference to the 1986 sci-fi comedy film Short Circuit, wherein a military robot is struck by lightning and gains human-like intelligence.

In addition to baked goods, Johnny 5 also serves alcohol in the evening. The opening of this shop in early 2015 has truly brought Chengdu donuts to the next level. Like Mike’s Pizza Kitchen and Red Beard Burgers, this is one of Chengdu’s tightly-focused expat eateries worth checking out.

In March 2015, Johnny created an Ask Me Anything thread on the Chengdu Forum.

Their cronut (croissant-doughnut pastry) is out of this world good & worth the price! Paninni’s are a bit overpriced in my opinion for what you get.

What an awesome guy Johnny is. Not only is he making great food and coffee, but he’s doing it all with a smile on his face (as you can see in the photo up there). He’s got such a great disposition, engages with customers, and doesn’t mind being bothered as he’s torching some marshmallow fluff. I’ve only been twice and had limited space in my stomach, but I’ve liked what I’ve had so far! Keep up the awesome work Johnny!

Hit this place today. Can’t train for the next month so every day is a cheat day. Sensational donuts and ridiculously rich hot chocolate. The photo here ain’t photoshopped either: Johnny was smiling up a tsunami. Will be back!

I’m so happy that Johnny 5’s has opened not too far from our house! Other French pastries I’ve had here in Chengdu pale in comparison to the pastries at Johnny 5’s.

I just heard they were open now last week and I’ve been there twice so far…that’s how good they are.

When I was a teenager I could eat 7 donuts in about 20 minutes. After going to Johnny 5’s donuts, I felt like a teenager all over again. Raspberry cream filled donut: 10/10-the best raspberry cream filled donut I have ever had. Boston Cream: 9 out of 10 stars. Glazed: 9.5 out of 10 stars. Johnny is a Donut Da Vinci. The donuts are a work of art, fresh, and remind you of why there is an obesity epidemic in America. There is not a hint of that gross-fake-sugar-or-is-it-gutter-oil-Chinese-bakery taste. This is now (along with Rumba and Mike’s) one of my favorite places to go in Chengdu. If Johnny were a jerk, I would still keep coming back to this place just for donuts, but Johnny is more friendly than Mr. Rogers and makes one of the best donuts I have ever eaten.
