Machu Picchu Bar

On a quiet alley in the Yulin neighborhood of Chengdu is Machu Picchu, one of the longest running bars frequented by foreigners in Chengdu. Small in size but frequently boasting outstanding live performances by local and traveling artists, Machu Picchu also has an impressive beer selection. Founded and managed by the Dutch and Chinese duo of Hise and Zhoufei, this is one of the friendliest bars you’ll find in Chengdu.

Prices

Beer in Machu Picchu ranges from 15 yuan for Qingdao to 50 yuan for a selection of European imports.

Awesome place with a great vibe. Hise and Zhoufei are usually playing good tunes and if not busy love to sit and chat.

The imports include a tasty Budweiser (traditional Czech, not the American binge beer) and the house special, Russian Coke is super tasty.

Usually a mixed crowd caught up in conversation and never rowdy, it’s the perfect place if you want to catch up with friends over a drink.

In my very short stay in Chengdu, I spent good times at Machu Picchu with the affable and talkative boss. Good memories.

Definitely my favorite place to hang in Chengdu.

They’ve got just the right atmosphere, down to the furniture that was all handmade by one of the owners.

It’s not one of those places for foreigners evading arrest back home.

It’s mostly a Chinese crowd, but one happy to speak (in Chinese) to a stranger that sits down at their table.

I also really dig the whole music theme there.

In addition to playing quite decent tunes on the sound system, they have a variety of instruments hanging on the wall that anyone can (and does) take down and start playing.

Every time I’ve been there, a folkie jam session breaks out.

I agree, Jim. This is one of the truly “classic” bars in Chengdu, along with Little Bar. But unlike Little Bar, Machu Picchu has maintained virtually the same style and atmosphere that it had many years ago.

Cheap drinks, good atmosphere, and some of the best live shows you’ll see in Chengdu.
