Meat Factory Korean BBQ

Meat Factory is a Korean barbecue located right across from Underground bar, in the Jiuyanqiao party area, serving authentic Korean barbecue in nearly every detail.

Before Chengdu I lived in Korea for years, and have been depressed/offended at most of the Korean food I have tried here. Finding Meat Factory has changed all of that. The small restaurant immediately looks right; the grills, the smoke hoods, the utensils. They even have the exact same bad dollar store tongs that every Korean barbecue in Korea (and my own kitchen) use.

The menu is, unfortunately, only in Chinese and the pictures are not terribly helpful. However the owner of the restaurant speaks Korean, so I was able to order (he also spoke a little English but I didn’t test how much he knew). Korean barbecue consists of various cuts of meat, which you grill yourself on a bowl of charcoal at the center of the table. You’re also served a variety of side dishes called banchan, such as kimchi, pickled daikon radish, and a green onion salad. The Korean way to eat is to cut the meat into small pieces with the scissors once it’s grilled, then wrap some meat, and whatever combination of the sauces and banchan you like inside a lettuce leaf, then jam it into your mouth and enjoy.

The menu has several categories. There is beef, pork, and seafood. They also serve Korean fried chicken, which we did not try but is, in general, the best thing. On the back there are various types of jeon, basically savory pancakes. There are also a few soups like kimchi jjigae. They also serve alcohol; I recommend getting the makgeolli, which I believe is 生米酒 in Chinese. It’s the one listed as 6% alcohol. For the meats, the samgyeopsal (pork belly) and galmaeggisal (diaphragm) are classic Korean barbecue cuts, and the seasoned moksal (shoulder) was also great. Expect to spend around 100 RMB per person.

To get to Meat Factory, if you know where Underground Bar is you’re already there. It’s not easy to explain so look at the map!
