Survivor Indoor Rock Climbing

If you’re looking to practice your rock climbing skills in Chengdu, there are only a handful of places that you can do that. Located in the South of Chengdu next to the Tongzilin Carrefour is Survivor Indoor Rock Climbing, has a 4-meter high wall which spans a wide room. Technically the climbing at this facility is classified as bouldering, as you climb laterally (left to right) more than up.

At Survivor there are no ropes or harnesses as you’re never more than 4 meters off the ground and there is thick padding on the floor to prevent injuries. Experienced climbers are on site and willing to offer assistance to novices at no charge.

The easiest way to find this place is to enter the mall from the same side as Carrefour and walk straight to the back of the complex and take the elevator on your right side to the 3rd floor. From the elevator you walk up two flights of stairs to find Survivor.

Climbing for 2 hours or less costs 80 yuan and includes shoe rental if you don’t have your own climbing shoes. Discounts for memberships which include unlimited climbing or for large groups. Water and refrigerated drinks are available for as low as 2 yuan in addition to beer, although they do not permit drinking and climbing.

It’s great for bouldering and if you want to get your muscles pumped, however it’s almost completely choose your own route. There’s definitely no lack of holds or variations and often you can find someone with a long stick who will gladly tap the next hold (of their choosing).

I’ve been putting up routes when I’m there – the tape is in a drawer near the shoe racks. The staff/resident climbers don’t seem to mind.

Great to hear there’s a decent bouldering wall in town.

Do any of the locals boulder outside? I’d heard of bouldering in Daocheng, but that’s some distance away.

There is a nearby mountain that is suitable for climbing, and they even advertise for it inside Survivor. I believe we’re going to organize a weekend trip out there to check it out, information will be posted on the forum.

The original management of the Survivor Wall have opened a new place in Suning Plaza (near Ikea and Galleria). I haven’t climbed there, although it looks like a better wall. Not much of an atmosphere when I was there, but then that whole shopping mall’s still pretty dead at the moment. The full address is 天府达到北段8号苏宁广场6楼604A号 成都生存者攀岩管 tel 85228220

Thanks for posting this info, I will check the new location out. I never went to Survivor when it was under the previous management but people say that it was better then.

Does your site have a contact page? I’m having a tough time locating it but, I’d like
to send you an e-mail. I’ve got some suggestions for your blog you might be interested in hearing. Either way, great site and I look forward to seeing it develop over time.

They’re under new ownership now, and they’ve put in an outdoor wall maybe 20 ft (6-7M) high, not open just yet but it’ll have topropes. They’ve also got a slackline and a new bouldering wall.

I just went there yesterday for my first visit. It’s hard to find — way in the back of the Great World mall complex, as far from Carrefour as you can get. Go up to the very top, behind and above the snooker parlour. Look for the prayer flags…

Admission fee is now 80 yuan, plus 10 yuan if you need to rent shoes. The selection of rental shoes is pretty sad — bring your own if at all possible. They also offer memberships and punch passes for fairly ridiculous prices — 600 yuan for a monthly membership. The admission price is as high as in many rock gyms in the USA, but the quality of the gym is not. There are only a few routes set and marked, with no grading, so it’s up to you to devise your own problems. Most of the gym is a 3m high vertical wall with holds bolted on in a grid — not too inspiring. There’s a nice steep section about 4m wide and 3m high, as well as an outdoor wall maybe 7 m high with two routes on it. One of the outside routes was set up with a toprope. The landing is concrete, so boulder carefully out here. All of the indoor walls have well-padded landings.

Wow, it was 35 yuan – now it’s 80? That’s quite a hike. I updated the listing, Mike. Thanks for sharing.

Hey there! I’m going to be visiting ChengDu for a few days for a dentist appointment. I live up north in Qinghai where climbing still seems to be completely undeveloped, and just realized that climbing might be possible while I’m in ChengDu!
I’d love to check out a climbing gym, but also if there are groups that go out frequently to the crags, I would LOVE to hop along.
Will anyone be going out Wednesday or Thursday? And/or, I’ve read now about Survivor climbing gym, but also that there’s a newer one close to Ikea? I’ll be going there also, so it might be convenient to go to that gym instead. The info I read above about that was from 2012 though? Does anyone have any more information about that?

    • Eileen October 6, 2016 at 9:34 pm #

Hey Juliana – did you end up going to Survivor, or making it outdoors? Heading back to Chengdu for a few weeks in Nov and would love to do some climbing!

      • Morgan October 18, 2016 at 5:46 pm #

I’m going to be in Chengdu the month of November for yoga and would love to get some climbing in.

Yo guys, this place is a wreck now. Came here to climb but the place was in a mess, no one around, and the strange thing is that the shoes and tiles are still there.

    • Charlie March 28, 2019 at 9:06 am #

No kidding, that is strange. To be honest, that location (the abandoned mall-looking place) was always a bit of a wreck.
